More about EBSCO and Britannica

EBSCOhost is a powerful online reference system accessible via the Internet. It offers a variety of proprietary full text databases and popular databases from leading information providers.

EBSCOhost provides full-text articles and resources in a collection of Reference Centers: Legal Information, Poetry and Short Story, Small Business, Hobbies and Crafts, and Home Improvement.

EBSCOhost is a trusted resource for consumer health information. The Consumer Health Complete database of articles, fact sheets about diseases, reference books, drug information, and medical procedures will assist your patrons with their medical questions.  It contains an online Merriam-Webster’s Medical Desk Dictionary for definitions of medical terms. The Health Highlight provides timely and pertinent information on new health developments or issues. For more advanced databases on medicine, consider EBSCOhost’s Medline and Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition, both excellent resources for nursing, dentistry and health care professionals, and students taking advanced science courses.

Explora, a user-friendly EBSCOhost search tool, provides online resources for your elementary, middle school, and high school students. This material can help with homework assignments, research papers, and information curiosity about events, people, and places. Each Explora sub-unit is created to support the age level of the student.

Another exceptional online resource to link to your library website is Britannica School. Designed for elementary and middle school students, as well as homeschoolers, this educational site provides fast answers and homework help, videos games and articles, and maps and illustrations to use in school projects.

Test Your Links

If your library website already has links to these sites, your next step will be to test those links within the library to see if you can get direct access without encountering a login screen. If the links don’t work (due to change of IP address or other reason) go to EBSCOhost Sign-up Form and Contact Info to contact EBSCOHost technical support or click Technical Support Submission Form to contact Britannica support.

Sign Up for EBSCO and Britannica for Your Library’s Website

If you have not previously signed up for EBSCOhost or Britannica:

  • Obtain your library’s IP address: at one of your library’s computers, get on Google and type in, “What is my IP address.” The number you get is the IP address needed for registration.
  • Visit the EBSCO and Britannica sign up page and click the sign-up/register links.

Tips for using EBSCO and Britannica on your library’s website

  1. For the remote log in user ID/password, we recommend choosing the same user ID/password for both sites. Use something like your town or school name, mascot, or the zip code—a user ID/password that is easy to remember by your patrons who want to log in away from the library. User ID/passwords should not be needed when patrons log in at the library.
  2. Do not post user IDs or passwords of state licensed EBSCO and/or Britannica accounts on any website.
  3. After you sign up, add some or all of these EBSCO links to your website: http://search.ebscohost.com
This is the Britannica link to add to your website: http://school.eb.com
  4. Add promotional graphics as your links to EBSCOhost and Explora for public libraries. You can also add the Britannica logo. Scroll down to “Logos.”
  5. Add descriptions with your database links. Edge requires descriptions to accompany links, and descriptions help your customers know what you have to offer. Here are some examples.
