Help Yourself + Help Others
According to the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS), more than 700,000 Oklahomans could benefit from treatment for mental illness or substance abuse disorders. Yet the state ranks 46th in the nation for state-sponsored behavioral health services.
As Oklahomans search for assistance, many turn to their public libraries to locate services and information. In a 2014 ALA survey of 1300 libraries, more than 85 percent of respondents said they assist mentally ill patrons on a regular basis.
To help libraries address this need, the Oklahoma Department of Libraries is pleased to partner with ODMHSAS and state and community organizations to host five regional workshops for librarians.
The free workshop will include:
- A morning session featuring an overview from a local community mental health center, plus tips on resource organizations that can help if you have a customer in crisis.
- A noon session on the subject of suicide and suicide prevention (Pizza provided by INTEGRIS Mental Health)
- An afternoon public program that showcases organizations and services that support families and individuals with mental health challenges
Library staff who attend the morning and lunch sessions will earn 0.27 CEUs. Participants who stay for the afternoon public session will receive an additional .24 CEUs for a total of 0.51 CEUs for the full day.
