Health Information Specialist Program

Computer & App ClassesThe Health Information Specialist Program is for librarians who hope to gain knowledge and resources that will assist them with providing accurate health information to their patrons.

Attendees may receive these kinds of credit:

  • CEUs applicable to the Public Librarian Certification program administered by ODL
  • Contact hours that can be applied toward the Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS) administered by the Medical Library Association (MLA)
  • Hours toward renewal of the CHIS

Participants may be interested in completing 12 hours of these classes in order to complete the Level I CHIS. The classes will apply to the Level I and most of the Level II Requirements for the CHIS Program.

Level I Requirements

  • Completion of 12 hours of approved courses or activities focusing on consumer health
  • One course focusing on the administration and management of consumer health services (example: collection development, library management, strategic planning and marketing)
  • 8 hours must be from the MLA-approved CHIS course list
  • Non-health sciences librarians may apply a basic searching class toward specialization
  • Eight hours needed to renew at same level

Level II Requirements

  • Completion of 24 hours of approved courses or activities focusing on consumer health
  • One course focusing on the administration and management of consumer health services (example: collection development, library management, strategic planning and marketing)
  • 18 hours must be from the MLA-approved CHIS course list
  • Non-health sciences librarians may apply a basic searching class toward specialization
  • Eight hours needed to renew at same level

Twenty hours of classes are planned for ODL in March and April. If anyone is interested in Level II, we can also identify some online webinars or other classes that will allow you to accumulate additional hours to meet the 24 hour requirement. Contact Doris or Shari for questions.
