Letter from Oklahoma Center for the Book

Dear friends and supporters of the Oklahoma Center for the Book—

It may come as no surprise that the Oklahoma Department of Libraries and the Friends of the Oklahoma Center for the Book are canceling the Oklahoma Book Awards banquet and awards ceremony that was planned for May 2.

Despite the banquet being canceled, we will be awarding medals for this 31st annual competition. Judges are communicating with the Center electronically in order to determine the winners in the five book categories. We expect to notify the medalists and finalists with the results sometime in April.

This year’s competition attracted 134 entries, and 32 finalists were selected. Since we will not have the opportunity to meet these authors, poets, illustrators, and designers in person, we hope some of you will be able to use this time to discover these titles, to reach out and congratulate the authors and illustrators, and to support them with the purchase of their books.

We plan to honor our Arrell Gibson Award recipient for Lifetime Achievement, Hannibal Johnson, at next year’s Oklahoma Book Awards banquet. Read about Hannibal and his many works on his website.

Watch your inbox for our announcement of this year’s medalists. The award results will also be posted on the Oklahoma Department of Libraries’ website and on social media.

We thank the Friends of the Oklahoma Center for the Book for their support and for always being there no matter which way the winds blow. They are simply the best!

We will miss seeing our friends this year, and we hope all of you stay healthy during this unprecedented time.
