A number of studies show that young people who continue to read during the summer prevent the summer academic slide. Summer readers return to school in the fall better prepared than non-readers. Other studies are revealing the positive effects of reading in general. Take this tour to find out about the research.
Sonic Drive-In has been a statewide sponsor of Oklahoma’s Summer Reading Program for 22 years! Sonic provides reading incentive coupons to libraries and helps ODL purchase more than 100,000 Book Bags for children and teens each summer.
While most of Oklahoma’s young people will be discovering A Universe of Stories during June and July, Summer Readers in Oklahoma County will go Wild About Reading. The Metropolitan Library System has selected this special theme to coincide with the Maurice Sendak Memorial Exhibit at the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library from June 15 to July 8. Sendak’s most famous children’s book is Where the Wild Things Are.
The Oklahoman’s Summer Reading Contest, held in conjunction with ODL’s statewide program, ran June 2 through July 21. The contest is meant for ages 5 to 12. The deadline for entries is July 31. Eight weekly winners receive a set of books. The grand prize winner receives an e-Reader!
